Meiosis is defined as a kind of cell division, which occurs in the germinal epithelial cells of the gonads to form the gametes.  Meiosis takes place in the specialised diploid cells of the gonads, and produce 4 haploid gametes, each having half the number of chromosomes as compared to the parent cell.  Meiosis is completed in two successive divisions – meiosis i and meiosis ii.  In meiosis i, as the chromosomal number is reduced to half, it is called reduction division.  and meiosis ii is similar to mitosis.
