Ida Jean Orlando was born in the year, 1926.She completed her nursing diploma in the School of Nursing at New York Medical College, her BS in public health nursing in St.John's University, New York, and her MA in mental health nursing in Teachers College, Columbia University, New York.  At Yale School of Nursing, Orlando was an Associate Professor and there she was also the Director of the Graduate Programme in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

While at Yale, Orlando founded the Orlando-Pelletier’s Nursing Theory, which can be expressed by an origami design. The three steps or techniques of patient behavior, reaction of the nurse, and action of the nurse are represented by three large folds.  This is basically a theory based on the understanding of the dynamic relationship between the patient and nurse.  Her husband was Robert Pelletier, and died on November 28, 2007.
