The term evolution may be defined as “a gradual development of more complex species from pre-existing simpler forms.”  It is an extremely slow process and has occurred over a million of years, as revealed out by fossil evidences.  Evolution has thus resulted in the diversity of living organisms, influenced by environmental selection.  Fifteen million years ago, in Africa existed hairy bodied gorilla and chimpanzees like Hominids.  After that 3-4 million years ago, men like Hominids, walked into Eastern Afica.  Evidence shows, that they hunted with stone weapons, but were mostly fruit eaters.  They were probably not taller than 4 feet.  But, they walked upright in the grasslands of east Africa.  These creatures were known as the first human like being, the Hominid.  The Hominid was known as Homo habilis.  The next stage of human evolution came into existence 1.5 million years ago with the rise of Homo erectus, who were meat eaters.  Archaic Homo sapiens arose in South Africa and moved across continents and developed into distinct races during the ice age.  Between 75,000-10,000 years, the modern Homo sapiens arose.  Pre-historic caves were developed about 18,000 years ago, agriculture came around 10,000 years back, and human settlements started.    

To understand evolution, a branching diagram or “tree” is used to show the inferred evolution, relationships among various biological species or other entities based upon similarities and differences in their physical and genetical characters.
