Commensalism is a type of relationship in ecology between two living organisms by which one organism benefits but the other neither enjoys any benefit, nor suffers any damage. There are two other classes of relationship named, mutualism, in which both the organisms enjoy the benefits;  and parasitism, by which one organism enjoys the benefit and the other suffers the harmful effects.  The word commensalism is derived from the English word commensal, which means sharing of food; which in turn is derived from the Latin word cummensa, which means sharing a table.

An example of commensalisms is the relationship between plants like orchids and mosses with trees.  These plants grow on tree branches and trunks as well.  They enjoy the light which they need for the process of photosynthesis, and also derive their nutrition from the tree.  The trees will not be affected unless the growth of these plants is dense. The mutual dependency or correlation between certain kinds of flora in our intestine from the perspective of commensalism or mutualism is still a question which is yet to be answered!
